About this item

Breed: Pinto Gender: Mare Age: 15 Height: 14.3hh Color: Paint/Pinto Disciplines: Prospect for Any Discipline Adoption fee: $500 Location: Houston Humane Society — Houston, TX This striking paint mare is a real head-turner — flashy white with rich chestnut patches, a kind eye, and a calm presence in the pen. She's still getting to know people, and so far she's showing herself to be curious and easygoing, happy to stand and be observed while she takes in everything around her. Condition & Current Status: She is extremely obese — this is the biggest factor in her care right now and will shape everything from her diet to her exercise plan. She has not yet had a full veterinary workup, so we don't yet know her metabolic status or whether she has any underlying conditions (such as EMS or PPID, which are common in overweight horses, especially paints). A thorough vet exam, bloodwork, and radiographs are the priority before any serious training or diet changes begin. Personality & Temperament: From what we've observed so far, she's a sweet-natured mare with a patient, watchful demeanor. She seems to size up new situations before engaging, suggesting a thoughtful, sensible mind—a good foundation for whatever job she ends up with once she's healthier. We were told that it has been a long time since she has been ridden, but she accepted the bareback pad well during her first behavior evaluation. What's Next: The immediate plan is conservative: a full veterinary workup, followed by a slow, vet-guided weight-loss program. No hard riding or heavy work until she's cleared and shed enough weight to protect her joints, feet, and metabolic health. With time, patience, and the right care, she has every chance to become a healthy, happy partner. Houston Humane Society is a rescue; this horse is for adoption, not for sale.
