Breed: Grade Gender: Mare Age: 13 Height: 14.0hh Color: Chestnut Disciplines: Trail Riding, Companion Adoption fee: $800 Location: ASPCA Equine Transition and Adoption Center at Nexus Equine β El Reno, OK Meet Dixie! Dixie is an athletic and receptive mare with a striking de-pigmented eye. She is an energetic horse with a sensitive side - once she feels comfortable around her people she will happily snooze in the sunshine and soak up all kinds of attention. Dixie is not dominant in a group setting and is accommodating to other herd members. She also has quite the passion for peppermints! Dixie is an extremely sweet girl, but she is still learning to manage her stress response while being handled. She arrived very shut down but has been tolerant of everything we’ve asked of her. She has since started to let her guard down, which has led to some beautiful moments of relaxation and connection, as well as some more exciting moments of self-expression! She will be best suited for an experienced handler who is comfortable guiding her through her emotional experience with patience and kindness. Dixie has a history as a riding horse, although she hasn’t been ridden in quite some time. We have been taking things slow with her to allow her to get comfortable in her new environment, but we are optimistic she could make a fun under saddle partner for an intermediate to experienced rider in the future. She does have some conformational abnormalities in her left front leg which will exclude her from any strenuous disciplines, but we believe she’ll be comfortable for light riding or trails. She is currently on a corrective shoeing plan with our farrier and will likely continue to need front shoes moving forward. Dixie is a solid citizen who is well-handled on the ground, evidenced by her completing all items on our Basic Behaviors Profile, and truly seems to enjoy her sessions with our trainers. She is intelligent and has been making great strides with regular training sessions. We think she will really thrive once she has her own person that she can form a deep bond with. We are excited to see what the future holds for this exceptional mare! ASPCA is a rescue; this horse is for adoption, not for sale. Rescue website: http://www.aspca.org
