Breed: Grade Gender: Mare Age: 15 Height: 15.2hh Color: Sorrel Disciplines: Companion Adoption fee: $600 Location: ASPCA Equine Transition and Adoption Center at Nexus Equine β El Reno, OK Mercy gets by with a little help from her friends while being the type of friend everyone is looking for! Mercy is blind and relies on her horse and human companions for safety and security. In turn, Mercy adores her people and will choose to spend time with you any chance she gets. She’s an in-your-pocket, bff-forever type who’ll brighten your day and ensure you never feel alone when at the barn. She’ll be right by your side as you muck stalls and complete barn chores and will be the first to greet you each morning with her adorable head tilt. As much as she loves people, Mercy also needs her four-legged friends and she is looking for a home where she can be a companion to another horse. She needs to be housed with another horse to help her navigate her environment and will flourish in a calm, consistent setting. An enclosure with secure and sturdy fencing is a must, and audio markers would be ideal. We’re more than happy to walk you through getting that set up and can assure you that Mercy is more than worth the effort. Mercy will actively choose you each and every day, and in turn, hopes that you’ll be the metaphorical shoulder she can lean on to navigate the world. She does best with a handler who is comfortable using voice cues to help her orient spatially. In new or stressful situations, she can sometimes become disoriented to her handler’s location but stays soft and thrives with reassurance. She does require some patience on farrier day and can be very sensitive about having her back feet handled. Otherwise, she’s been solid to handle on the ground and has shown us that she is a smart cookie. She is looking to engage with her people, and when we combine that with her brilliant brain, we think she will be highly trainable on the ground and could be a good candidate for liberty work or trick training. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to this kind-hearted mare, we encourage you to reach out to learn more. Mercy is a lover, and she’s looking to be loved by someone just like you!
