Hachi selected by McCollough Equine Services for ATFO 2027! Follow along here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1W1s8biyoQ/ From the Trainer 7/6/26 HOP 2nd Required Post #hopteamhachi The last several weeks, Hachi has settled into his personality and really given a glimpse of how he’s going to be long term! This post isn’t as exciting as many would probably hope, but it’s real and he’s still doing all very good things. In that note.. I’ve spent the last week alone doing nothing but ground work. A session we did with the saddle and introducing new people a while ago, I really didn’t like the way he was responding or lack of response honestly. I really don’t want him to internalize or not communicate. He has a hard enough time as is, relaxing with me and engaging in the situation. So we’ve done nothing but exercises to get more engaged and do more choosing to be present versus just “tolerating” things and just being there. In this video, you’ll see two clips of his very grumpy face.. and I mean frumpy. That day he was just not present and really not willing to engage, so we took a break and came back and he gave me a much better recourse. Which has been my buggiest focus recently. Until he gives me solid green flags all the way around, we’ll be keeping our butts on the ground lol. Right now I’m seeing all yellow flags.. which is better than red!! Hachi is surviving the Texas heat (I am not) and he’s beginning to like a cool shower as well. Today he really threw me a wild card and chose to hand graze and eat from my hands which is something prior he totally wouldn’t have even tried. So I guess my feeling like a failure and very unsure if I’m doing the right thing.. is kind of working ntil this point Hachi has hated places that make him feel confined, he will NOT use the sheds in the turn out pens. However, he’s decided a stall with a fan and no bugs is quite nice. Plus he can leave at anytime when I’m around feeding or etc.. if he feels uncomfortable but he’s been choosing to stay inside with me, and comes in on his own while I’m working in the barn. It’s the small things. From the Trainer 6/16/26 Exactly 36 Days ago.. Mr Hachi arrived to me in Texas! We weren’t able attend physical pick up, and we had some hauler troublers so I received him almost 2 weeks behind all the other trainers.. At the time, having picked one of the truly feral selections this year and also one that wasn’t on anyone’s favorite list.. (can’t believe yall were picking on my boy.. ) I was concerned that being behind and loosing that time was going to be costly. However.. Hachi says no problem in exactly 36 days he’s learned to be haltered lead broke Allow me to put a fly mask on be turned in and out of a pasture be caught in a pasture that requires no chasing getting comfortable picking up his feet willingly is beginning to accept grooming and affection lunges both directions and doesn’t drag you around accept being sprayed by a water hose Take oral meds accept fly spray And most recently… to be saddled And in no ounce of this am I saying he’s perfect at all of these, and that he’s a broke ole pony, because he’s not. Every day is a new day with ferals. We rinse and repeat and take the time to make sure he’s comfortable and has all the tools to be a great companion. Consistency is key. I am merely saying, he’s got a great brain on him. He’s progressing phenomenally and I can’t be more happy The Appalachian Trainer Face Off is a one-of-a-kind event that brings together horse trainers from across the country to compete while highlighting adoptable horses and showcasing each trainer’s skills. A history of good horsemanship, the ability to provide sufficient care with good vet, farrier and peer references are important. If you are a first time horse owner, we will require you to board at a facility for the first year while you learn more about care. We encourage everyone to take advantage of riding lessons. Foal adoptions require previous, established experience with youngsters. Our adoption process makes sure you get the right horse for you – it is a no fail process for finding the right match.
