Almost always under the sweat flap — lift the flap under the rider's leg (usually the left side) and look for stamped characters in the leather. French brands stamp the model, seat size, flap code, year and a serial number there.
The usual pattern is model, seat size in inches, then a flap code (a digit for length plus letters for how forward the flap is cut), then the year and serial. Formats differ by brand — see the brand guides below for exact decoding.
